Welcome to Shanghai for IMO 2026: Preparations Progressing Steadily

June 12, 2026

The 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026) will be held in Shanghai from 13 to 21 July 2026. The event is organized by the Chinese Mathematical Society and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, with Shanghai High School serving as the host institution.

Preparations for the competition are progressing steadily. Registration, volunteer coordination, catering, transportation, and operational support arrangements are all proceeding as planned. The official countdown to the opening has begun, and the organizing team is ready to welcome young mathematicians from around the world to Shanghai.

As of 10 June, participant registration has been largely completed. More than 1,100 participants from over 120 countries and regions have officially registered, including 685 contestants, 119 team leaders and 117 deputy team leaders. The strong level of international participation once again reflects the global reach and significance of the International Mathematical Olympiad.

A comprehensive volunteer programme has been established. Reflecting the campus-based nature of the event, each delegation will be supported by a dedicated teacher guide and a student guide. More than 200 volunteers have joined the programme. In addition, all of Shanghai High School’s more than 500 faculty and staff members are participating in event operations and support services, alongside over 30 international teachers serving as volunteers. Together, the campus community is preparing to welcome delegations from around the world for IMO 2026.

Catering arrangements prioritize safety, variety, and thoughtful service. Two campus cafeterias, located at the first floor of the Main Canteen and the Hsi Building Canteen will provide buffet service, offering more than 60 dishes. The menus combine international cuisine with local Shanghai specialties, and all dishes are clearly labelled with ingredient and allergen information to ensure food safety and accommodate dietary needs.

Accommodation arrangements are in place. Shanghai Hua Ting Hotel & Towers provides over 500 guest rooms, along with catering and conference facilities, to meet the needs of event management and staff. On-campus dormitories — over 430 single or double rooms — will be available for participating students. The accommodation facilities are fully equipped with living amenities and supporting services, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and convenient environment.

A coordinated transport system with sufficient capacity has been established. Nearly 100 dedicated vehicles will operate shuttle services connecting the airport, competition venues, activity sites and accommodation facilities. Point-to-point transfers will ensure safe, efficient and convenient travel for all participants.

A range of supporting activities has been carefully planned, including access to student activity centres, sports facilities and cultural visits in Shanghai. Rooted in the campus setting, IMO 2026 integrate mathematical competition, academic exchanges and cultural experience, providing opportunities for participants to engage, learn from one another and build international friendships.

The Local Organizing Committee convened multiple coordination meetings at municipal and district levels to advance preparations across all areas of operation, including reception services, competition logistics, major events, cultural excursions, logistical support and emergency response protocols.

With one month remaining until the opening of IMO 2026, preparations continue to move forward in an orderly manner. the Local Organizing Committee will further refine operational procedures and reinforce support services, drawing on the advantages of the campus venue to ensure a successful International Mathematical Olympiad and a memorable experience for all participants.
